What is a Giclee print? Giclee (zheeCLAY) is a French term meaning “to spray.” It is the use of the inkjet process for making fine art prints. In the early 1990’s, the term referred to prints made from the “Iris” inkjet printer that was developed for digital graphic proofing. Since then, the technology in equipment, media and inks has moved forward. The term now describes a high resolution, large-format ink-jet printer output with fade-resistant, pigment-based archival inks. Many artists use this method as an alternative to lithography for limited editions or reproductions of high quality at a more affordable cost. |
